We all knew it was coming; at their conference Microsoft announce Gears of War 4 in style by showing actual gameplay. Nice!
The first thing to note is that Marcus Fenix and co are gone, replaced by at least two new characters. The second thing that becomes obvious is that the tone of the game seems to be aiming to go back to the series more horror/action roots than the much more bombastic, vibrant style of Gears of War 2 and 3. The downside to this is that the gameplay we saw was incredibly dark, to the point where I struggled to make out what was going on most of the time.
In terms of gameplay it was…lackluster. It seemed to play exactly like the previous games, even down to the pacing. Since I do really like the Gears of War series I am genuinely quite happy to simply get upgraded graphics, but the critic in me was hoping to see bring something new to the table.
Microsoft also confirmed the existence of Gears of War: Ultimate Edition, a 1080p, 60fps remaster of the original Gears of War coming to Xbox One on August 25th.
Gears of War 4 is set to arrive during 2016.
