Meet the six new Garden Warfare 2 characters

A part of me doesn't want to hear any more about Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 knowing full well that it's not releasing until spring 2016. I was way into the original. I'll be way into this.
The cast includes six new classes on top of the returning crew. The fresh faces are: Imp and Z-Mech, Citron, Super Brainz, Rose, Captain Deadbeard, and Kernal Corn.
14 classes. 100+ character variants. I sincerely hope the progression system is more generous.
My favorite of the bunch -- and the only class I've played as yet -- is the Imp (while he's in his mech, naturally). Some interesting new choices, for sure. I'm hopeful PopCap rebalances the returning characters in a big way so I won't be tempted to just stick with the Foot Soldier again.

Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 is out in February

The eternal plants versus zombies conflict returns on February 23, 2016 -- that's when Garden Warfare 2 is hitting PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

Thinking back on how many hours I poured into the first game, my fate is sealed. It was a enough of a twist on the genre to really sink its hooks in, and I suspect it'll be the same story with the sequel.

Pre-orders include a couple of bonuses: "immediate access" to the Grass Effect Z7-Mech, which has a working Zomni-tool blade and the biotic power to "pull" enemies closer, as well as 14 emoji-esque masks for character customization. The Citron emoji is cute, I'll grant them that.

PlayStation messaging gets its very own iOS and Android app

Other than actually physically shaking them, there's only one way to get in touch with friends/ significant others playing Fallout 4 and that's PlayStation messaging. While it's become much more user friendly of late, complete with stickers from the last update, Sony has announced a standalone iOS and Android PlayStation Messages app.
Announced on the PlayStation Blog and out today, the app will allow you to see if your friends are online, send messages to individuals or groups and send photos and voice messages. Plus, the stickers are back so you can send as many cartoon pictures of Nathan Drake as you want. The original PlayStation app will still be on hand for lining up downloads when you are out and about and for use as a second screen.

Everything we know about Lego Marvel's Avengers

Lego Marvel's Avengers is shaping up to be a virtual museum of Marvel comics goodness. While the core of this game focuses on a handful of recent Marvel films - orbiting the periphery are countless references and callbacks to the comic company's colorful past. If you ever wanted an interactive primer covering the who's who of superhero comics, this is it. And you better believe Stan Lee makes more than a few cameos. This is also a Lego game through and through - right down to its simplistic, beat-'em-up play style. The game will be released in January of 2016 on, well, pretty much everything - but until then here's what you need to know.

Xbox One Fallout 4 1TB bundle $329 in early Cyber Monday sale

Update 11/30: Deal's dead! Next best bet is this $299 GOW bundle or $349 1TB bundle with free $60 gift code (which you can basically use to buy Fallout 4).
Here's an Xbox One Fallout 4 bundle that crept up on us "unexpectedly." We somehow thought this sale was going to happen on Sunday night or else we would have mentioned it earlier. Turns out the spreadsheet said 9PM PST on 11/27 FRIDAY... And thus just before Black Friday has closed the curtain in the West Coast... out comes an early Cyber "Monday" deal.
If you missed out on Microsoft Store's Black Friday deal (which started on a Wednesday night), Antonline has 2,000 units of Xbox One Fallout 4 1TB bundles up for grab at a low price of $329.99. This is a pretty swell deal all things considered, especially since sales tax is imposed in California and Georgia only.
FYI, you'll need to add to cart before you can see the price. Shipping is free.
There's only about 700 units available left so the deal should end well before Monday. Will it last through Saturday? Who knows, but there also aren't too many shoppers awake at this ungodly hour. Gamers totally sleep, right?
Update: Deal was expired but now available again. Huh.

Fallout 4's first patch is boring, but probably necessary

Sometimes, video game patches sort out or enable quirky features. For instance, The Witcher 3 had one earlier this year where severed heads no longer disappeared. That's a good patch! Developer CD Projekt Red was like "Players won't like those heads disappearing. We need to fix that!"
But, other times, patches are just boring updates meant to make the game play better. I guess that's probably necessary, even if a little humdrum. That's Fallout 4's first official patch. The most interesting thing in it is that you'll no longer get stuck at the in-game computer (while you're stuck at your real-life computer).
This update is already live on PC. According to the Bethesda forums, it'll be coming to consoles sometime this week. The entirety of the patch notes can be found below, including the Corvega Assembly Plant fix that should make the game run at higher than, like, four frames per second.

PlayStation Network's holiday sale is up

Darren has been talking up Tales from the Borderlands for months now. I don't care much for Borderlands, but I have finally followed his advice and downloaded "Telltale's best series to date."

Over two million people watched The Game Awards 2015

Blimey, a lot happened at The Game Awards this year, didn’t it? Psychonauts 2, aTelltale Batman series, and a very obvious lack of Hideo Kojima were among this year’s highlights, and according to host Geoff Keighley, a lot of people tuned in.
Talking to Polygon, Keighley announced that over two million people watched the livestream (roughly 20% more than last year), and there were more than one billion impressions on Twitter. The vast majority of the viewers watched via Twitch and YouTube. The show was also available through the Xbox One.
Keighley believes the show managed to break even this time, which pretty much guarantees that there will be The Game Awards again in 2016. He’s already got some ideas for what he wants to do next year, which includes a larger eSports presence:
Next year will be about adding other elements around the show… One thing I wanted to do this year was a big eSports tournament the day of the show, but we just didn't have enough bandwidth to get it done.
So did you enjoy the show this year, or do you think it has some problems that need addressing for the third attempt in 2016?

Halo 5 now has Big Team Battle

With today's 6.2GB "Battle of Shadow and Light" update for Halo 5: Guardians, Big Team Battle is in. My old favorite!
The eight vs. eight multiplayer playlist supports Capture the Flag, Strongholds, and Slayer, and it's playable on four new maps: Basin, Deadlock, Guillotine, and Recurve.

Besides those additions and some tweaks to existing content, 343 is rolling out a bunch of new REQs. Not all of these items will be immediately available, but everything should be in the game within 24 hours.

New Splatoon map coming out

During today's Nintendo Direct, Nintendo announced the immediate DLC plans for its hit multiplayer shooter Splatoon. Starting today, an update with new gear will be rolling out.

The bigger deal is the new map, Museum d'Alfonsino. It comes out tomorrow, just in time for the weekend splatting.
A second map, Mahi-Mahi Resort, was also shown, which features changing water levels, making the last part of the match more unpredictable. It almost has a Super Mario 64 Wet-Dry World idea going for it, but with more paint and squids.

Activision Blizzard forms studio for TV and film

Before long, we're going to start to see television shows and even movies based on Activision Blizzard properties. The company is putting together a new "film and television studio devoted to creating original content" for its series like Call of Duty,StarCraft, and Diablo.

The first project to come out of Activision Blizzard Studios will be an animated TV show,Skylanders Academy, led by Futurama writer Eric Rogers. There are also plans for (here it comes!) a Call of Duty "cinematic universe," with the "possibility of television adaptations" as well.

I don't know about all that, personally speaking, but adaptations of Blizzard's games could be cool.

Refer a friend to Destiny and get a reward

As a thank you for recruiting new Guardians this holiday season, Bungie will be rewarding players with a new Refer-a-Friend scheme for Destiny.
"After this update is deployed, some of the more tech savvy among you will be able to dig up some details for a new initiative we have planned to arrive just in time for the holiday season," writes community manager, Cozmo, in this week's weekly update. "We’re planning something new to recognize and reward the Sherpas among you. We are calling it Refer-a-Friend.
"Maybe you have a friend who will be getting Destiny as a gift this season. Perhaps their gift-giver will even be picking it up for them at a holiday sale coming to a store near you. If you intend to show them the way to the mountaintop, we’ll have new rewards aimed at recognizing your service to the Kinderguardian."

As Bungie are "putting the finishing touches on the program" we don't yet know how this will work in practice, but let's see if those "tech-savvy" people can tip us off in advance.
I'll admit that even I haven't played much Destiny of late -- there are too many shiny new games distracting me. What would it take to bring you back to the Cosmodrome, Guardian?

This week's Destiny raid challenge forces every player to participate

Bungie has cycled in the new raid challenge this week for Destiny, as part of an effort to deliver a few pieces of guaranteed 320 loot to hardcore players, and keep them interested in the game. Instead of focusing on the War Priest, this time Golgoroth is in the spotlight for the King's Fall raid.

The gist is that each player now needs to hold his gaze consecutively in a given cycle. What I mean by that is, that all six players are required to "hold gaze" in a single run, switching said gaze before it drops (read: the timer runs out). For those who aren't aware, you have to shoot the fleshy back portion of the boss to grab his attention, or, his "gaze" -- when you're holding it, the boss will fire homing orbs at you, which you're required to shoot to prevent your death, while the remaining five members fire at Golgoroth's chest to do damage.

Click Here To Level Your World of Warcraft character solo from lvl 1 to 100 the FASTEST Way Possible
In essence, this is a slightly more difficult, but more tedious version of the fight. Previously, most groups opted to go for a "single orb" strategy, where they would have one player hold gaze the entire time in waves, making the battle relatively easy as long as one person knew what they were doing (Shadestep or Bladedancer makes this even easier for dedicated Hunters). To be clear, you can still do a single orb strat this week, but you'll have to pass around the gaze a total of six times.
The way our group did it for hard mode three times is to drop an orb as normal, and have the first gazer pick it up as normal. All five remaining players blast away at his chest, and at eight seconds left on the gaze timer, the second person jumps out and grabs it. From there, we all jump out, and assign numbers to every player -- cycling the gaze in sequential order, and passing it immediately -- then on the last cycle, we meet back in the middle, drop an orb, and fire at his chest for the last gaze. Then we jump out and repeat that two or three times, depending on the damage.
It's not difficult, but every raid member needs to participate and have at least some form of raid awareness. As a result, I've heard of numerous friends giving up today because one or two people kept messing up the mechanics. It's interesting for sure that every person needs to do something (very few fights require this, as you can mostly get away with half the group doing the majority of the mechanics), but it's still a relatively dull way to approach challenges.
I thought there would be something more to it, to be frank, like an extra mini-boss, or an actual brand new concept, not just an alteration of an existing one. But recycled content is the name of the game for Destiny, so I should have known better.
For your troubles, you'll get a 320 Artifact, 320 piece of armor, an emblem, and a Calcified Fragment.

Destiny moving to a more 'event-based model,' no more 'monolithic DLC packs'

Once again Bungie has flip-flopped on how it's handling Destiny going forward. In the past, it was rumored the developer was giving up on large-scale DLC packs, which was shot down, noting that it was going to focus on both. Now it sounds like the big DLCs are out again, as Bungie's Derek Carroll has stated to Eurogamer that they are "moving to a more event-based model."

When asked about DLC packs, Carroll noted that "Rather than doing these giant, monolithic DLC packs [we're moving to events], this way everybody who's an owner of Taken King can enjoy these things." The next phase for Destiny is the three-week Sparrow racing event, debuting in January, which will have an optional $10 microtransaction-based "book," that keeps track of your stats and quests.
Sharing this news with my raid group, the consensus was that they were going to move onto other games, since the only reason they log on weekly is to tackle major pieces of content, which are now going stale. We'll see how this more casual approach serves Bungie in the end, when a portion of their hardcore userbase abandons the game.
What Activision told us recently when asked for comment is interesting. We were told, "We don't have any expansions planned for this year. We've yet to announce plans for 2016." No expansions for Destiny makes sense, but will we see a Destiny 2 announcement at E3?

Star Wars Battlefront is now 33% off at GameStop

Looks like there are plenty of Battlefront copies at GameStop. As part of its weekly sale, the retailer has Star Wars Battlefront on all platforms at a big fat $20 off. (That's 33% for those without a calculator handy.)

The Deluxe Editions are also on sale at $49.99, but we're not sure if it's worth the extra $10 to pick up. Heck, you can probably argue Battlefront at $39.99 is iffy (since we're still on the sidelines and all the hardcore fans have already bought and uh, "finished" the game).
For those on PC, note that there's actually no physical copy provided. The "physical copy" GameStop ships has no disc in the packaging and only a download card with the Origin product code on it.
